Des chercheurs britanniques ont découvert des substances aux propriétés antibiotiques inattendues chez les coquerelles et les sauterelles qui pourraient contribuer à la création de nouveaux traitements contre les bactéries résistantes. Le docteur Simon Lee et ses collègues de l'Université de Nottingham ont découvert neuf molécules différentes dans les cerveaux et les tissus nerveux de ces insectes qui seraient toxiques pour les bactéries!
Selon le chercheur, les insectes vivent souvent dans de très mauvaises conditions sanitaires et d'hygiène, dans des environnements où ils sont exposés à un grand nombre de bactéries différentes. Il est donc logique qu'ils aient développé des moyens de se protéger contre les micro-organismes.
Selon les scientifiques cette découverte pourrait déboucher sur des traitements contre certaines infections fréquemment résistantes aux antibiotiques communs. Leurs travaux montrent que ces substances sont capables de tuer plus de 90 % des staphylocoques dorés résistants à la méticilline (SARM) et des Eschirichia coli (E. coli).
